Announcing the Winners of Wolda ’09

Wolda, the Worldwide Logo Design Annual, has announced the winners of its 2009 book “09 Wolda”. The judges have selected 192 logos from nearly 2000 entries from all over the world. The winners are as follows: The overall winner is “Circus of Magazines” logo designed by Olivier Courbet for the online magazine marketplace. In the student category Wolda Talent, Keo Pierron from Texas, USA was the overall winner with the “Ponzu Sushi house” logo.

Wolda is the high-profile graphic design award scheme that rewards the best logos and trademarks designed throughout the world, creating an archive that tracks the evolution of tastes, styles and trends in global design, year after year. Wolda is the only awards scheme in the world endorsed by more than 100 design associations and schools. Designers, agencies, studios and students from all over the world are invited to enter.

Description: Logo created for Circus of Magazines™, an online marketplace for magazines. It combines an open magazine and a circus tent in order to represent the online community and by extension the website, a place where magazine lovers gather to buy, sell and exchange magazines. The challenge consisted of avoiding any clichés while keeping in mind the client’s desire to incorporate a classic circus feature in the mark. The final result is a simple and memorable logo and a mark that works well for stand-alone usage.

Description: 200 years of the First Croatian reading room “DRUZBA OD STENJA”, Zadar, 1807-2007 Two hundred years of the First Croatian reading room in town Zadar (Croatia) is a poster printed in one colour on special paper. On poster is shown only text folder like the book, magazine or newspapers. Text on poster is explanation of 200 years anniversary celebration and also time and place of celebration. Typography is Times New Roman. The Logo 200 dominates on poster which is made from typographies Times (number 2) and Futura (“00”), and with shadows they give form to glasses placed on text.

Description: Global Vision 2020 works to bring corrective eyeglasses to the more than one billion people in the developing world who would benefit from them through a combination of methods – using self-adjustable eyeglasses that allow users to correct their own vision and using established distribution networks available through the world’s aid and development organizations by providing glasses and training at little or no cost to them. Shape of frame of the glasses is very close to the original and “!” symbolize the unique idea and a principle mechanism of self adjustable glasses.

This logo forms part of a campaign designed to help Birdlife Malta stimulate social conscience about illegal bird hunting, while increasing pressure on the Maltese authorities to enforce international protection laws.

Description: Stavros Demosthenous Contractors, one of the leading contractors and developers in Limassol, recently requested the design and development of a logo for their latest ultra-luxurious residential complex in Limassol: Alkion Seafront Villas. The project is the epitome of exclusive urban living in Cyprus, in a prime location directly overlooking the sea. The name Alkion has its roots in Greek mythology. The particular legend refers to the halcyon birds, a type of kingfisher – often spotted in the Limassol district – which is synonymous with serenity, safety and happiness… just like the Alkion properties. The logo symbolizes the bird and what it stands for. Clear lines express untainted sophisticated. Different shades of blue reflect the gently lapping waves of the sea. The typeface is custom-designed. The logo as a whole incorporates, in a very subtle way, the nature of the development, from every perspective.

Description: Logo for Biva’s (brand) household product line of impregnating agents, named Nan∞, for almost infinite range of materials (stone, wood, glass…), all based on nano sized particles in form of liquid dispersions. Due to the changed surface tension of the a particular material (where agent was applied), the water forms a distinctive pattern of diffused droplets and trickles off of it.

Description: The client’s new strategy – a regional airline company – improved the acquisition of new airplanes that demanded a new position to its brand and image: younger, more prepared and professional, faster in its flights. The objective was to refresh the identity bringing new life at any touchpoint making more closer the company with its customers and stakeholders. A new brand from the old logotype, a redesign of the old symbol was made – the three birds – inspired in draws about wind aerodynamic and flying birds, respecting the DNA of the brand. The most important strategy thing will be the color change, bringing more lightness by the yellow color. The new brand has a smooth and powerful distiction, becoming contemporary, friendly and attractive. Also creates an identification using the yellow color in check-ins and airports lounges – that was never used in brazilian airline market.

Description: Punkalive wood furniture is manufactured with a patented technology allowing total freedom of shape. The factory in Punkaharju is run by two brothers with values set strong in sustainability. Punkaharju region has a beauty that was duly noticed by russian czar Alexander in 1809, whose heraldic symbol was an eagle with two heads. Czar’s decision to preserve the area marked the beginning of Punkaharju National Park. The creative element behind the trademark is mystique associated with Finnish nature and closeness to heritage. The service is targeted for interior designers and architects.

Description: Brand for a bookstore specialized in books of design, architecture and photography. Description: The logo of the urological practise “Urologie Deutz” of two young doctors was developed in support of the architecture of the practise. The typical in the rooms, directly behind the entrance, is the long hall on the left from high doors and passageways is lined. By this much natural light occurs. Everything is bright and friendly.

Description: “Seghe Mentali” in italian literally means “mental Wank” but “sega” has another meaning as well that of the “saw”. It is a phrase used to describe people who dream with open eyes, and think that everything is possible. This naming has created a line of illustrations and t-shirts. The mark is a head from which a saw escapes … ironic and immediate.

Description: Pomegranate L+D is a Letterpress Printer and Design Studio. The classic art of hand letterpress with modern design and technology in an environmentally sustainable way are combined. The logo needed to be modern, clean and simple, but also reflecting the traditional printing history. It needed to be designed for printing on a letterpress as well as viewing in the online world. In order to show our hand crafted quality, a Pomegranate tree was hand drawn scanned and then drawn in Illustrator. The final touch was using the fruit itself to replace the “O”, it allows us flexibility when the tree cannot be used for small space applications.
